Velvet Apple / Mabola (Seedling) Fruit Plant

Velvet Apples range in color from golden-yellow to orange and purplish-red. They feature a dark, persistent calyx at the stem end and are covered in fine brown hairs, giving them a velvety texture. Seedless varieties are typically short and squat, similar in shape to a persimmon, while seeded types are more rounded. Fruits may develop flat spots when growing in tight clusters of two to four. They generally measure 5 to 10 cm in width.

The skin is thin but can be tough and slightly bitter, so it is usually removed before eating. In some varieties, the skin may also have an unpleasant aroma that fades after peeling. The flesh is white to off-white, crisp when mature, and softens slightly as it ripens. The flavor is sweet and often compared to banana-flavored apple or strawberry-mango yogurt with subtle notes of berries and bubblegum. Darker red fruits are generally considered sweeter than lighter-colored ones.
