Sundrop (Layering) Fruit Plant

Sundrop is a rainforest shrub to small tree that produces large, highly aromatic but sour fruits. The flavor is often compared to passionfruit. The plant typically matures to around 10 feet in height and is well suited for container cultivation. Flowering and fruiting usually begin within 3 to 4 years from seed.

Fruit Characteristics and Uses

Sundrop fruits are very sour and are mainly used for making juice and preserves. The pulp can be deseeded and frozen, then blended with water and sugar to produce a bright orange, highly aromatic juice similar to passionfruit. In some regions such as Colombia, the fruit is also used to flavor alcoholic beverages.

Sundrop is a good source of vitamin C, containing approximately twice the amount found in an average orange, making it a nutrient-rich tropical fruit.
