Rambai (Red, Seedling) Fruit Plant

Rambai, scientifically known as Baccaurea motleyana, is a tropical fruit tree native to Southeast Asia. It grows wild in some regions and is cultivated for its edible fruits in Bangladesh, Thailand, and Peninsular Malaysia. The species is commonly known as rambai or rambi.

Tree and Botanical Characteristics

The rambai tree typically grows 9–12 meters tall with a short trunk and a broad, spreading crown. The leaves are evergreen, with a shiny green upper surface and a greenish-brown, slightly hairy underside. Each leaf can grow up to 33 cm long and 15 cm wide.

The species is dioecious, meaning male and female flowers grow on separate trees. Both flower types are fragrant and have yellow sepals. Male flower clusters (staminate racemes) can reach up to 15 cm in length, while female inflorescences may grow up to 75 cm long.

Fruit Description

The fruits are 2–5 cm in length and grow in clusters or strands. They have velvety skin that can be pinkish, yellow, or brown, and it becomes wrinkled as the fruit ripens. Inside, the fruit contains whitish pulp with 3–5 seeds. The flavor ranges from sweet to slightly acidic.

Uses

Rambai fruits can be eaten fresh, cooked, or processed into jams and wine. In addition to fruit production, the tree is also used for providing shade and as a source of low-quality timber.
