Peanut Butter (Seedling) Fruit Plant

Peanut Butter Fruit, botanically known as Bunchosia argentea or Bunchosia armeniaca, is a tropical fruit tree belonging to the Malpighiaceae family. It is native to northwestern South America, including Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Venezuela, Brazil, and Peru. The plant is also commonly referred to as the Bunchosia fruit tree and is known by several names such as Green Plum, Monk’s Plum, Peanut Butter Tree, and Peanut Butter Fruit.

This species is both ornamental and productive, valued for its bright yellow flowers and vibrant red fruits, which can appear on the plant at the same time. Although the fruit is edible and flavorful, it has not achieved commercial cultivation on a large scale due to its highly delicate and perishable nature. The taste is often described as similar to sweet peanut butter or cooked sweet potato, though the flavor profile is unique and mild.

Peanut Butter Fruit is a small evergreen tropical shrub or tree that typically grows to a height of 2–4 meters (6–13 ft). It naturally occurs in both dry and moist limestone forests, coastal regions, and dry rocky lowlands. The plant prefers moist, fertile, well-draining loamy soil rich in organic matter and should be protected from waterlogged or mucky conditions.

It is considered a low-maintenance plant. Harvesting is usually staggered, and under suitable conditions, the plant may produce more than one fruiting cycle per year, similar to acerola. Fruits are best harvested when they are still orange and firm, as they continue to ripen and turn red after picking. Birds are highly attracted to fully ripe fruits left on the tree.

Peanut Butter Fruit is rich in carotenoids, especially lycopene, containing levels significantly higher than those found in tomatoes. Lycopene is known for its antioxidant properties and is concentrated in human prostate tissue, making this fruit of interest in nutritional and health studies.

It is believed to support heart health by helping reduce cholesterol levels, which are linked to cardiovascular diseases. The fruit is also used in culinary preparations such as jellies, jams, muffins, preserves, and flavored drinks or milkshakes.
