Orange (Bush, Layer) Fruit Plant

Nagpur Orange is a premium variety of orange grown in Nagpur, Maharashtra, India. Known for its rustic, slightly pockmarked outer skin, this fruit is prized for its sweet taste and highly juicy pulp. The Nagpur orange is so closely associated with the region that Nagpur is often called the “Orange City” of India. It also holds Geographical Indication (GI) status in India, officially registered in April 2014.

Nagpur oranges typically blossom during the monsoon season and are harvested from September to December, with peak availability around December. The crop is known to produce fruit twice a year under favorable conditions, making it a valuable commercial citrus variety.

Maintenance of Nagpur Orange Plantation

Fertilizing
Fertilization practices for orange trees depend on the intended fruit quality and yield. Higher nitrogen levels increase oil content in the peel, while potassium helps reduce it. For good fruit production, approximately 1 to 2 pounds of nitrogen per tree per year is recommended, along with balanced doses of potassium, phosphorus, and essential micronutrients. In mature orchards, foliar feeding is also used once or twice a year to improve nutrient absorption. Soil testing is advised for accurate fertilizer management in older plantations.

Watering and Weed Control
Young orange trees require regular watering until well established. Mature trees should be irrigated deeply every 1–2 weeks in dry regions, with more frequent watering in arid climates. Mulching around the base helps retain soil moisture and regulate temperature. Weed control is essential, and all weeds should be removed within a 1.5-meter radius of the plant to reduce competition for nutrients.

Pruning and Tree Management
Orange trees do not require heavy shaping, but maintenance pruning is important. Any branches close to the ground (within 1 foot) should be removed. Dead, damaged, or diseased branches should also be pruned promptly to maintain tree health and airflow.

Harvesting Nagpur Oranges
Fruits are harvested when they reach full size and develop their characteristic orange color with a balanced sweetness and acidity. Harvesting should be done carefully using clippers or secateurs to avoid damage. It is recommended not to harvest during wet weather or rainfall to maintain fruit quality and storage life.
