Noni (Morinda citrifolia), also known as Indian Mulberry, Cheese Fruit, Beach Mulberry, or Great Morinda, is a tropical evergreen fruit tree belonging to the Rubiaceae (Coffee) family. Native to Southeast Asia and Australasia, it is now widely cultivated throughout tropical regions, including India, for its unique fruits and traditional uses.

The Noni tree grows naturally in coastal areas, rocky shores, sandy soils, and tropical forests. It reaches a height of up to 9 meters (30 ft) and features large, glossy, dark green leaves with prominent veins, making it an attractive ornamental as well as fruit-bearing tree.

One of the most remarkable features of the Noni plant is its ability to flower and produce fruits throughout the year. The fruits are oval-shaped, measuring 10–18 cm in length. They change color from green to yellow and finally creamy white as they ripen. Fully ripe fruits develop a strong characteristic aroma, which has earned them the common names Cheese Fruit and Vomit Fruit.

Traditionally, Noni fruits have been consumed in many tropical regions either fresh, cooked, or processed into juices. In parts of Southeast Asia, the fruits are eaten with salt or cooked in curries, while the roasted seeds are also edible.

Benefits & Uses of Noni

  • Produces nutrient-rich tropical fruits traditionally valued in many cultures.

  • Rich in Vitamin C, antioxidants, dietary fiber, and beneficial plant compounds.

  • Commonly used to prepare fresh juice, herbal beverages, and health supplements.

  • Attractive evergreen tree suitable for home gardens and tropical orchards.

  • Flowers and fruits continuously throughout the year under favorable conditions.

Plant Care & Fertilizing

Noni thrives in warm, humid tropical climates and grows well in well-drained, fertile soil. It adapts to a wide range of growing conditions, including sandy and coastal soils.

  • Apply a slow-release balanced fertilizer during the growing season to encourage healthy growth and regular fruit production.

  • Young trees benefit from regular watering until fully established.

  • Mature trees require moderate watering during prolonged dry periods.

  • Organic compost or well-rotted manure helps improve soil fertility and long-term plant health.

Harvesting

Noni fruits are harvested when they begin changing from green to creamy white, or when they become fully ripe, soft, and translucent. Trees generally begin producing fruits within 2–3 years, with consistent production increasing as the tree matures. Under favorable growing conditions, healthy trees can produce fruits throughout the year.
