Mosambi (Sweet Lime, Layer) Fruit Plant

Sweet lime, scientifically known as Citrus limetta (also considered a cultivar of Citrus limon), is commonly called Musambi, Mosambi, sweet lime, or sweet lemon. It is native to South Asia and Southeast Asia and is also widely cultivated in the Mediterranean region. In India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, sweet lime juice is one of the most popular citrus beverages, often sold fresh at roadside stalls.

Musambi is a small citrus tree that grows up to 8 meters (26 ft) tall, with irregular branching and smooth brownish-grey bark. The plant has numerous thorns ranging from 1.5 to 7.5 cm in length. Its leaves are compound with narrowly winged petioles and acuminate leaflets. The flowers are white and fragrant, measuring about 2–3 cm in width. The fruit is oval-shaped, green when young, and turns yellow as it ripens. Despite its name, sweet lime resembles a greenish-orange in appearance, with a white pith and greenish pulp.

The fruit has a mild, sweet flavor with a subtle citrus essence and very low acidity. Its taste is refreshing but delicate, and it tends to change quickly after exposure to air, often becoming slightly bitter if not consumed immediately. It is commonly compared to limeade and pomelo in flavor profile. Because of its low acidity, sweet lime is widely consumed as fresh juice rather than eaten whole.

Sweet lime juice is especially popular in South Asia and is often served fresh with optional additions such as salt, black salt (kala namak), or chaat masala, depending on regional preferences. It is also valued for its vitamin C content, providing around 50 mg per 100 g serving.

Fertilizing Requirements
Sweet lime trees are typically fertilized twice a year, during May–June and September–October after the monsoon season begins. A balanced citrus fertilizer mixture containing nitrogen (20%), phosphorus pentoxide (12.2%), potassium oxide (10%), magnesium oxide (2%), and sulfur trioxide (10%) is applied, usually 2–3 kg per tree depending on size. Fertilizer should be applied around 1 meter away from the trunk to avoid damage. Additional magnesium may be applied if signs of deficiency, such as yellowing leaves, appear.

Harvesting Musambi
The harvest season generally falls between June and September, depending on the variety and climate. Fruits mature 3 to 5 months after flowering. Harvesting is usually done when the fruit shows slight yellowing or color development. Sweet limes should be picked before they become overripe, as they soften quickly after harvest. Once picked, they continue to ripen and are best consumed fresh for optimal flavor and juice quality.
