Manila Tamarind (Seedling) Fruit Plant

Manila tamarind (Pithecellobium dulce (Roxb.) Benth.) is a small to medium-sized semi-evergreen leguminous tree belonging to the Fabaceae (pea family). It is native to the Pacific coast and nearby highlands of Mexico, Central America, and northern South America. The species is also known by several names, including Camachile, Monkey Pod, Sweet Inga, and Madras Thorn.

This fast-growing tree typically reaches a height of 10–15 meters (33–49 ft). It has a spiny trunk and bipinnate leaves with small paired leaflets. Some varieties may be thornless. The fruit develops as thin, greenish-brown to reddish-pink indehiscent pods that often appear in twisted or spiral clusters. Each pod contains about 10 flat, shiny black seeds.

The pulp inside the pods is thick, sweet, and slightly acidic, making it edible and popular as a fresh snack. It is also used in beverages similar to lemonade. Manila tamarind has been widely naturalized in regions such as the Caribbean, Florida, the Philippines, Guam, Thailand, and parts of South Asia due to historical trade routes.

This species is highly adaptable and nitrogen-fixing, allowing it to grow in dry, saline, and a wide range of soil conditions, including brackish environments. It is considered a multipurpose tree with edible, agricultural, and ecological value.

Manila tamarind is rich in dietary fiber, water content, and essential nutrients that support digestion, regulate appetite, and may assist in weight management. It is traditionally used to help with oral health issues such as toothaches, sore gums, and mouth ulcers.

Bark extracts are used in traditional practices for treating dysentery and chronic diarrhea. The fruit contains thiamine, which supports energy metabolism and may help stabilize mood and stress levels.
