Mangosteen (Mesta Early Fruiting, Seedling) Fruit Plant

Mangosteen, scientifically known as Garcinia mangostana and commonly called purple mangosteen, is a tropical evergreen tree belonging to the family Clusiaceae. Native to Southeast Asia, it is widely cultivated in countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore, and is known as the “queen of fruits.” The fruit is highly valued for its juicy, delicate texture and sweet-tart flavor with a mild astringent note. It is commonly consumed fresh and is also used in canned and dried forms.

The fruit has a deep purple outer rind and a soft white segmented pulp inside, which is highly aromatic and refreshing. In India, it is known by different regional names such as Mangustan (Hindi), Kaattampi (Malayalam), Kokam (Marathi), Hannu (Kannada), and Kao (Bengali). Mangosteen is popular among chefs and home cooks for its unique tropical flavor, and it has also been associated with historical popularity, including a legend that Queen Victoria offered a reward for fresh mangosteen fruit.

Mangosteen has also been used in traditional medicine in several cultures, although scientific studies supporting major medicinal claims are still limited.

Maintenance of Plantation

Maintaining consistent soil moisture is essential for optimal growth and productivity. While mangosteen can be propagated through grafting, seed-grown trees are generally more vigorous and often produce higher yields.

Fertilization

Mangosteen responds well to regular fertilization. Soil or leaf analysis is recommended to determine nutrient requirements. Applying granular fertilizer every two months along with monthly foliar feeding helps improve growth. Proper fertilization during the early stages can reduce the juvenile period from six to four years. During fruiting, foliar sprays combined with soil fertilization help enhance fruit size and overall yield.

Pest and Disease Control

Mangosteen trees generally experience few serious pest issues, but occasional problems include leaf-eating caterpillars, ants, mites, and damage from animals such as monkeys, bats, and rats. Physiological disorders such as “gamboge” (latex exudation) and fruit cracking may occur due to excessive rainfall, moisture imbalance, or storm damage. These conditions may affect appearance but not always eating quality.

Harvesting Mangosteen

Mangosteen trees typically begin fruiting 5–6 years after planting under proper care. The tree generally flowers once a year, although a second flowering may occur after a dry period. In India, harvesting seasons usually occur from July to October and from April to June.

Fruits should be hand-picked carefully to avoid impact damage, which can reduce quality. For tall trees, long poles with hooks and baskets are used to collect fruit safely. Proper handling is essential because mangosteen is highly sensitive to bruising and cracking.
