Mamey Sapote (Seedling) Fruit Plant

Mamey sapote (Pouteria sapota) is a tropical fruit native to Central and South America and is commonly found in markets across Mexico. It is a popular fruit in Latin American cuisine and is often compared to avocado in the way it is cut and eaten. The fruit is mildly sweet with a rich, creamy texture and is widely used in desserts and beverages.

This fruit is known by different regional names, including mamey colorado (Cuba), zapote colorado (Costa Rica), and zapote rojo (South America), which all refer to the reddish color of its flesh.

Mamey sapote is a medium to large-sized fruit with an oval shape. It typically measures 10–25 cm (4–10 inches) in length and 8–12 cm (3–4.5 inches) in width. The outer skin is rough and sandpaper-like, forming a protective layer over the soft flesh inside. Botanically classified as a berry, its flesh ranges in color from pink to orange to deep red. When fully ripe, the pulp becomes soft, creamy, and salmon-colored.

The flavor is rich and complex, often described as a blend of sweet potato, pumpkin, honey, prune, peach, apricot, cantaloupe, cherry, and almond. Its texture is smooth, melting, and highly dessert-like.

Mamey sapote is commonly eaten fresh and is also used in milkshakes, smoothies, ice cream, and fruit bars. It is further processed into marmalades and jellies and can also be stewed or used in wine production.

Nutritionally, it is an excellent source of vitamin B6 and vitamin C, and also provides riboflavin, niacin, vitamin E, manganese, potassium, and dietary fiber, making it a nutrient-dense tropical fruit.
