Mafai, scientifically known as Baccaurea motleyana, is a tropical fruit tree found in Southeast Asia. It grows wild in parts of evergreen forests and is cultivated in countries such as India, Bangladesh, Thailand, and Peninsular Malaysia. Although it is naturally widespread, it is considered relatively rare in many regions. The fruit is known to be rich in iron content and other nutrients.

The fruit is often compared in appearance and taste to longan. It typically ranges in color from yellow to red and measures about 2.5–5 cm in diameter. The skin is thin, soft, and smooth. Inside, the fruit is divided into 2–4 segments resembling cloves. The flesh is juicy, white, and offers a sweet and slightly sour refreshing taste. Each segment contains a seed that has a bitter taste and is not edible, making consumption slightly difficult as much of the pulp adheres to the seed.

The fruit grows on a slow-growing evergreen tree that can reach up to 25 meters in height, with a spreading crown and thin bark. Mafai is sometimes called “Burmese grape” and is consumed fresh, or used in stews, beverages, and wine production. In some regions, it is also used in traditional practices for skin-related conditions, while bark, roots, and wood are used for medicinal purposes.

Mafai Benefits & Nutritional Value

Mafai is considered a highly nutritious fruit, containing protein, carbohydrates, magnesium, potassium, chromium, and significant amounts of ascorbic acid (vitamin C). It is especially valued during winter and spring seasons when vitamin intake may be lower.

It is traditionally used as a general health tonic and for recovery support, particularly after illness or surgery involving blood loss. The fruit is believed to support overall body strength and immunity.

In traditional medicine, extracts from the bark and roots are used for their antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, particularly in treating skin conditions.
