Madrono (Seedling) Fruit Plant

Madrono fruit, scientifically known as Rheedia madruno (also classified as Garcinia madruno), is native to the Golfo Dulce region of Costa Rica, the Atlantic slopes of Panama, and much of northern South America, including Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Guyana, and Bolivia. It is particularly common in Colombia’s Cauca Valley but remains relatively unknown outside its native range.

The tree is an evergreen species with a lush, compact growth habit and a pyramidal to nearly rounded crown, typically reaching 7–20 meters in height. Its leaves are opposite, elliptic to oblong, with a wedge-shaped base and a rounded or pointed tip. The plant produces fragrant flowers, with male and female flowers occurring on separate trees. Flowers grow in clusters of up to 14 in the leaf axils and have four pale-yellow petals; male flowers contain 25–30 light-yellow stamens.

The fruit is round to ellipsoidal, sometimes with a slight nipple at either end, and measures about 5–7.5 cm in length. It has a thick, leathery, warty greenish-yellow rind that contains a deep-yellow resinous latex. Inside, the pulp is white, translucent, juicy, aromatic, and sweet-acid in flavor. It adheres tightly to 1–3 oval seeds. The fruit is considered sweet and tasty when fully ripe, but it should not be harvested early, as unripe fruits are highly acidic and do not continue to ripen after picking.

Madrono Fruit Benefits & Uses

Madrono fruit is commonly used for making jams due to its rich flavor and natural acidity. The tree’s yellow latex has traditional use in Panama for treating ulcers and skin sores.

The wood is pinkish and hard but is not widely used commercially. The fruit and other parts of the plant are also used in folk medicine in various regions.

In some traditional herbal practices, infusions made from the plant are believed to help support blood pressure balance and provide relief from common colds.
