Lychee (Indian, Layering) Fruit Plant

Lychee (Litchi chinensis) is the sole species in the genus Litchi, belonging to the soapberry family (Sapindaceae). It is a tropical evergreen tree native to the Guangdong and Fujian provinces of China, where cultivation has been documented since 1059 AD. Today, China is the leading producer of lychee, followed by India, Southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent, and parts of South Africa.

The lychee tree produces small, fleshy fruits that are widely appreciated for their sweet, aromatic flavor. The fruit has a rough, pink-red outer skin that is inedible but easily peeled to reveal a translucent white aril. This inner flesh is juicy, fragrant, and sweet, often described as having a floral or perfume-like taste. Because this delicate flavor is lost during canning, lychees are most commonly consumed fresh.

Lychee fruits vary in shape from round to oval or heart-shaped and typically grow up to 5 cm in length. The thin, tough rind changes from green when immature to red or pink-red when ripe. Inside, the edible aril surrounds a single seed and delivers a refreshing, highly aromatic taste that makes lychee popular in desserts, beverages, and fresh fruit platters.
