Longan (Ping Pong, Layer) Fruit Plant

Longan (Dimocarpus longan), commonly known as longan, is a tropical fruit-bearing tree belonging to the soapberry family (Sapindaceae), which also includes lychee and rambutan. Native to tropical Asia and China, longan is widely cultivated for its sweet, juicy fruit and is considered one of the most important fruits in Southeast Asian horticulture.

The fruit closely resembles lychee in appearance and structure but has a milder, less aromatic flavor. When peeled, the translucent white flesh surrounds a single glossy black seed, giving the fruit an “eyeball-like” appearance, which is the origin of its common name. The outer shell is thin, bark-like, and typically light brown, becoming easier to peel when properly ripened. The seed is hard, round, and inedible.

Longan fruit is sweet, juicy, and succulent, with a lighter, drier sweetness compared to lychee. It is commonly eaten fresh or used in Asian cuisine, including soups, desserts, snacks, and sweet-and-sour dishes. Dried longan is especially popular in Chinese cuisine and traditional herbal preparations, where it is used in sweet soups and believed to have calming properties. The fresh fruit is white and juicy, while dried longan becomes dark brown to nearly black.

Longan trees thrive in sandy soils and warm climates and are sensitive to extreme cold, though they can tolerate brief temperature drops. Proper irrigation, mulching, and balanced fertilization support healthy growth and fruit production. Regular pest management is important, as the trees are susceptible to insects such as scale insects and lychee webworms, and fruits may be affected by birds or bats if not protected.

Harvesting must be done only when fruits are fully mature, as longan does not continue to ripen after picking. Mature fruits develop a light brown shell and reach optimal sweetness when fully ripened on the tree.
