Langsat (Seedling) Fruit Plant

Langsat, also known as lanzones, is a tropical fruit tree scientifically classified as Lansium domesticum (family Meliaceae). It is also referred to by various names such as lansa, langsep, lanzon, and kokosan in different regions of the Old World tropics.

The tree is typically upright with a short trunk and can grow to a height of 10–15 meters. It has reddish-brown to yellow-brown furrowed bark and pinnate leaves measuring 22.5–50 cm in length, consisting of 5–7 leaflets. The leaflets are dark green and glossy on the upper surface and paler beneath.

The plant produces small white to pale yellow flowers arranged in simple or branched racemes, which emerge from the trunk and older branches. These flower clusters later develop into fruit bunches containing 2 to 30 fruits.

The fruit is oval to nearly round, about 2.5–5 cm in diameter, with a thin velvety skin that ranges from pale yellow to light brown or pinkish. Inside, the fruit is divided into 5–6 translucent, juicy segments (arils) with a sweet to slightly acidic flavor. Some segments may contain seeds, which are large, green, and very bitter.

Cultivation & Propagation

Langsat is commonly propagated through seeds, wild seedlings, air layering, budding, or grafting. Seed propagation is slow, often requiring 10–18 months for seedlings to reach grafting size. The species prefers shaded young growth stages and requires regular watering, especially during early development and fruiting.

Proper spacing, irrigation, and soil management are important for healthy production. Mulching and pruning help maintain tree health and productivity. Irrigation also influences flowering and fruit quality, while sudden water changes during fruit development may cause fruit cracking.

Pest & Disease Management

Common pests include bark borers, caterpillars, mites, scales, and fruit-feeding animals such as bats, birds, and rodents. Diseases such as root rot and anthracnose can affect yield and fruit quality, leading to fruit drop and post-harvest losses. Protective measures include pruning infected branches, applying insect control methods, and bagging fruit clusters.

Harvesting & Planting

Fruits are harvested when most of the bunch (around 90%) is ripe, indicated by a color change from brown to yellow. Harvesting is done carefully to avoid damaging the fruiting points. Multiple harvest rounds are often required as fruits ripen unevenly.

Recommended planting distance ranges from 6 to 12 meters depending on variety and region. Planting is best done at the beginning or end of the rainy season. Organic manure and fertilizer are commonly added during planting to support early growth.
