Kiwi (Layering) Fruit Plant

Kiwifruit, also known as Chinese gooseberry, is the edible berry of woody vine species in the genus Actinidia. The most commonly cultivated variety is oval-shaped and about the size of a large hen’s egg, typically measuring 5–8 cm in length and 4.5–5.5 cm in diameter.

The fruit originates from East Asia, particularly modern-day China, where it has been cultivated for centuries. It was introduced to New Zealand in the early 20th century (around 1904) when seeds were brought by educator Isabel Fraser, leading to its global commercial cultivation.

Kiwifruit vines grow best in full sun to light shade and prefer slightly acidic, well-drained but moist soil with a pH of around 6.0–6.5. Proper soil conditions are important for healthy growth and fruit production.
