Guava / Perakka (Varigated, Layer) Fruit Plant

Variegated Guava is a productive tropical fruit tree from Thailand, known for its ornamental appearance and edible fruit. It produces medium-sized fruits suitable for fresh eating as well as canning and preservation. The smooth, round fruits have a striped exterior and a creamy white interior flesh. Fruits typically weigh around 0.4–0.7 lbs and are tart, aromatic, creamy, and juicy.

The tree has a striking appearance with a maturing trunk covered in copper-colored bark that naturally peels to reveal shades of pink and green. Light pruning is recommended to develop a strong structure that can support fruit weight during the fruiting season. Growth rate varies depending on soil type, sunlight, temperature, and growing conditions.

Variegated Guava grows best in full sun to partial shade but does not tolerate excessive heat. It is frost-sensitive, and mature trees may shed leaves in winter while new growth emerges in spring. The plant requires well-drained soil and is sensitive to waterlogging. Regular deep watering is important, especially during the growing season, while allowing the soil to dry slightly between irrigations. Water should be applied at the base to prevent fungal issues.

Fertilization should be done regularly using balanced nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium. Young plants benefit from frequent light feeding, while mature trees require fertilization several times a year. Iron supplementation may be required in alkaline soils to prevent chlorosis. Proper watering after fertilization helps avoid root burn.

Pruning helps develop a strong canopy by encouraging lateral branching and removing weak growth. Pest and disease management is essential for healthy production, along with regular maintenance practices such as weeding, fertilizing, and seasonal care.

Fruit matures within 2–4 months after flowering. It changes from hard green to softer, colored fruit when ripe and can also ripen after harvest when stored at room temperature. Early picking is possible for slightly tart fruit preference.

For planting, guava should be placed in full sun for best productivity and spaced adequately to allow proper growth. It thrives in well-drained soils with a pH range of 4.5 to 8.2 but is sensitive to saline and waterlogged conditions. Proper spacing, sunlight exposure, and soil preparation improve long-term yield and plant health.
