Guava / Perakka (Strawberry, Layer) Fruit Plant

Strawberry guava is a large shrub or small tree native to South America that thrives in warm climates. It is often preferred over common guava due to its attractive foliage and fruit, as well as its sweeter and less musky tropical flavor.

Strawberry guava (Psidium littoralei), also known as cattley guava, purple guava, or Chinese guava, typically grows between 6 and 14 feet (2 to 4 meters), though it can grow taller under ideal conditions. The tree produces red fruit in most varieties, though yellow-fruited types also exist. The fruit resembles common guava with a juicy, fragrant pulp and seeds, but it has a distinctive strawberry-like flavor and is considered more pleasant and less musky. It can be eaten fresh or processed into puree, juice, jam, or jelly.

The plant naturally maintains a compact, bushy form and is often used in landscaping. It tolerates poor soils, including limestone, and is more adaptable than common guava in difficult conditions. However, better soil and consistent watering improve fruit production. It is drought-tolerant once established but benefits from regular irrigation, especially during fruiting.

Strawberry guava grows best in full sun and warm temperatures between 21–29°C. It can tolerate short periods of drought and is relatively hardy, surviving mild cold down to around -5°C. Regular watering improves fruit quality, particularly during development, while avoiding waterlogging is essential for root health.

Fertilization should be done three times a year using a balanced fertilizer such as 6-6-6 to support healthy growth and fruiting. Light pruning helps maintain shape and encourages bushier growth, and is best done after the fruiting season. The plant is generally resistant to major pests and diseases, but regular maintenance such as pruning, fertilizing, and cleanup improves long-term health.

Fruit typically matures within 90–150 days after flowering. Trees begin fruiting within 2–4 years and can remain productive for many years, although yield may decline after long-term maturity. Fruits are best left to ripen on the tree for improved flavor.

For planting, strawberry guava should be placed in full sun with well-drained soil and proper spacing. It thrives in a wide range of soil types but performs best in fertile, well-drained conditions with consistent moisture. It is sensitive to overwatering and should not be planted in waterlogged areas.
