Guava / Perakka (Madhuri, Layer) Fruit Plant

Madhuri Guava is a tropical fruit tree that requires full sun to partial shade for optimal growth, but it cannot tolerate excessive heat. It has low tolerance to cold conditions and is highly frost-sensitive. Mature trees may shed leaves during winter, while young plants may be damaged or die in severe cold. New leaves emerge from early spring.

Strawberry guava (Psidium cattleianum) produces pear-shaped fruits with green rind and pinkish or white flesh containing small seeds. The fruits are typically 4 to 12 cm long and may be round or oval depending on the species. The skin may be rough with a slightly bitter taste or soft and sweet. It remains green when unripe and turns yellow, maroon, or green when fully ripe. The fruit has a strong fragrance, and the pulp ranges from sweet to sour, with colors varying from off-white to deep pink depending on the variety.

Strawberry guava is an attractive, drought-tolerant tree that produces abundant fruit throughout the year. When ripe, the fruit turns maroon to dark red. Fruit size ranges from small (dime-sized) to about half the size of a golf ball. The flesh is yellowish-white with red-pink streaks and contains several hard yellow seeds. The skin is thin and easily bruised when ripe.

The plant is a medium-sized tree or large bush with a moderate growth rate. It has multiple almond-shaped leaves and dense evergreen foliage, making it useful as a natural screen as well as an ornamental plant. Flowers are small, white, and not very conspicuous.

Strawberry guava grows best in full sun to partial shade but does not tolerate excessive heat. It is sensitive to frost, and mature trees may drop leaves in winter while young plants may suffer damage. It prefers well-drained soil and is sensitive to waterlogging. Proper irrigation is important, especially during fruit development, but overwatering should be avoided.

Fertilization should be done regularly using balanced nutrients to support growth and fruiting. Light pruning helps maintain shape and encourages healthy branching. Regular care including watering, fertilizing, and pest management improves productivity and plant health.

Fruit matures within 2–4 months after flowering. It can ripen on the tree and also after harvest when stored at room temperature. Proper harvesting at full color and fragrance improves flavor quality.

For planting, guava should be placed in full sun or partial shade with well-drained soil and proper spacing. It grows well in a wide range of soils but performs best in fertile, deep, and non-waterlogged conditions with a pH range of 4.5 to 8.2. Proper spacing, sunlight, and soil management are essential for healthy growth and high fruit yield.
