Grumichama (Yellow Brazilian Cherry) Fruit Plant

Grumichama, also known as Brazil cherry or Spanish cherry, is an attractive tropical fruit tree that can grow up to 45 feet in height. It belongs to the Myrtaceae family and is valued for both its ornamental appearance and edible fruit production. The tree has thick, waxy, deep green oblong leaves measuring about 3–4 inches long.

It can also be maintained as a smaller shrub, pruned to around 6 feet in height to make fruit harvesting easier. In regions such as Hawai‘i, it grows successfully and produces fruit at elevations ranging from 300 to 2000 feet.

The tree adapts to a variety of soil types but performs best in well-drained, slightly acidic soil. It prefers a warm environment with partial shade to full sun and should be protected from frost, especially when young. Protection from strong winds and harsh western sun is also recommended for optimal growth.

During the first three years, young plants benefit from staking for wind support and frost protection. Once established, the tree requires minimal pruning, though it can be shaped to a manageable height for easier harvesting.

The fruit is small, round, and dark purple to almost black when ripe. It has a sweet, cherry-like flavor and can be eaten fresh or used in jams, jellies, pies, and other desserts.
