Grumichama (Black Brazilian Cherry, Seedling) Fruit Plant

Grumichama, also known as Brazil cherry or Spanish cherry, is an attractive tropical fruit tree that can grow up to 45 feet tall. It belongs to the Myrtaceae family and is valued for both its ornamental appearance and edible fruit production. The tree has thick, waxy, deep green oblong leaves measuring about 3–4 inches long.

It can also be grown as a smaller shrub and maintained at around 6 feet in height to make harvesting easier. In places like Hawai‘i, it produces fruit successfully at elevations between 300 and 2000 feet.

Grumichama adapts to a variety of soil types but grows best in well-drained, slightly acidic soil. As a subtropical species, it prefers warm conditions with partial shade to full sun and should be protected from frost when young. Protection from strong winds and harsh afternoon sun is also recommended for healthy growth.

During the first three years, young trees should be staked for wind protection and shielded from freezing conditions. Once established, pruning is minimal, though the plant can be shaped to a manageable size for easier harvesting.

The fruit is small, round, and turns dark purple to nearly black when ripe. It has a sweet, cherry-like flavor and can be eaten fresh or used in jams, jellies, and pies.
