Grapes (Vitis vinifera) are delicious fruits that grow on deciduous woody vines belonging to the flowering plant genus Vitis. Botanically, grapes are classified as berries and are one of the most widely cultivated fruit crops in the world.

Grapes grow in clusters of 15 to 300 fruits and may be crimson, black, dark blue, yellow, green, orange, or pink in colour. "White" grapes are actually green and are evolutionarily derived from purple grapes. Mutations in two regulatory genes prevent the production of anthocyanins, the natural pigments responsible for the purple colour. These anthocyanins, along with other polyphenols, also contribute to the rich colour and antioxidant properties of red wines.

Grapes are typically oval to ellipsoid in shape and are prized for their sweet, juicy flavour. Grape vines grow best in full sunlight, where they receive the warmth needed for healthy growth and proper fruit ripening.

MAINTENANCE OF THE PLANTATION

Mulching is generally not recommended for grapevines, as it can keep the soil temperature too cool. Grapevines prefer warm soil for healthy root development and vigorous growth.

After planting, water the vines regularly throughout the first year to help establish a strong root system. Grapevines require sturdy support, such as a trellis, arbor, pergola, fence, or strong post, as the vines grow rapidly and become quite heavy. They can be trained and pruned into various shapes depending on available space and growing preference.

FERTILIZING

During the first 2–3 years, apply compost around the base of the vines each spring to encourage healthy growth. Grapevines grow vigorously and may benefit from additional nutrients during the growing season if needed.

As vines mature, fertilizer requirements depend on plant vigour. Healthy, vigorous vines may not require additional fertilization. Avoid applying mulch around the base of the vine, as grape roots prefer warm soil conditions.

WEED CONTROL

Keep grass and weeds away from the base of grapevines to allow the soil to warm quickly during spring. Warmer soil encourages earlier growth and stronger vine development.

Remove weeds regularly by gentle hoeing or hand weeding throughout the growing season to reduce competition for nutrients and moisture.

PRUNING

Pruning depends on the training system and the available growing space. Grapevines can be trained along fences, trellises, pergolas, arbors, or single stakes.

During the first year, focus on developing a strong root system and a straight main trunk. Once the trunk reaches the desired height and lateral branches are established, prune the vine each spring before new growth begins. Proper pruning improves air circulation, reduces disease problems, and encourages healthy fruit production.

There are many pruning and training methods for grapevines, allowing gardeners to choose the system best suited to their landscape.

HARVESTING YOUR GRAPES

The best way to determine if grapes are ripe is to taste a few fruits, as many varieties develop their colour before reaching full sweetness.

  • Harvest entire clusters using clean pruning shears or heavy scissors.

  • Handle grape clusters carefully to avoid bruising.

  • Remove damaged, discoloured, or poor-quality berries.

  • Cool the harvested grapes as soon as possible to maintain freshness and quality.
