Dunal (Uvaria Rufa, Seedling) Fruit Plant

A Rare Tropical Fruit with a Sweet-Sour Flavor and Attractive Red Fruits!

Dunal (Uvaria rufa) is a species of vine or shrub commonly known as Susung-kalabaw or Torres Strait Scrambler, belonging to the Annonaceae family. It grows naturally in Cambodia, Thailand, New Guinea, throughout Malesia, and the Cape York Peninsula of Australia. This evergreen plant typically reaches a height of 4 to 6 metres, making it an attractive addition to tropical gardens.

The plant features deep green leaves arranged alternately with a distinctive heart-shaped base. The leaves have a velvety, coarse texture, while the small flowers display deep red, waxy petals that add ornamental value to the plant.

The fruits appear from May to August and grow in clusters of round or oblong berries, turning a vibrant deep orange to rich red when fully ripe. Each fruit contains numerous seeds surrounded by a translucent, juicy pulp. Dunal fruits are edible and are prized for their refreshing sweet-sour flavor, making them enjoyable when eaten fresh.

Apart from its edible fruits, the wood of Uvaria rufa is also valued as a rattan substitute and is traditionally used in the manufacture of furniture, baskets, and various handicrafts.

GROWING CONDITIONS

Dunal thrives in warm, humid tropical climates with well-drained, fertile soil. It grows best in partial shade to full sun with regular watering during the establishment period. Proper care and adequate moisture encourage healthy growth, flowering, and abundant fruit production.
