Member of the palm tree family (Arecaceae) and the only living species of the genus Cocos!

The Coconut (Cocos nucifera) is a tropical fruit produced by the coconut palm tree. Its trunk measures 1 to 2 feet in diameter and has no branches, but carries a crown of feather-like leaves that rise 70 to 100 feet above the ground. Each leaf is typically 10 to 20 feet long and is made up of numerous leaflets.

Coconut fruits hang in clusters of 10 to 15 at the base of the leaves, with several clusters ripening throughout the year. A healthy coconut palm can produce up to 200 coconuts annually, although the average yield is around 40 coconuts per year. Coconut palms grow naturally along tropical seacoasts and are widely cultivated in moist, frost-free climates, making them abundant throughout Southeast Asia and other tropical regions.

Fertilizing

Coconut palms grow well in a variety of soils as long as they are well-drained. They thrive in an average temperature of 72°F (22°C) and annual rainfall of 30–50 inches (76–127 cm).

Regular fertilization is often necessary for home landscapes. Coconut palms are susceptible to nitrogen deficiency, which causes yellowing of older leaves, and potassium deficiency, which appears as brown necrotic spots on older leaves and may eventually affect the trunk.

To prevent potassium deficiency, apply sulfur-coated potassium sulfate beneath the canopy at a rate of 1.5 lbs per 100 square feet (0.68 kg per 9.3 m²) of canopy area four times a year.

Irrigation of Coconut Tree

Soil moisture is a key factor in coconut production, especially in areas with prolonged dry spells or uneven rainfall.

During summer, irrigate the palms by watering the basin around the tree. Water requirements vary depending on the soil type and climatic conditions. Generally, a mature coconut palm requires 600–800 litres of water every 4 to 7 days for healthy growth and optimum fruit production.

Planting Instructions

  1. Plant coconut palms in a location that receives full sunlight throughout the day.

  2. Keep the soil consistently moist using warm water, but avoid overwatering or waterlogging. During winter, increase humidity by misting the plant or using a humidifier if necessary.

  3. Coconut palms are adaptable to different soil types but grow best in well-drained sandy soil. A quality palm potting mix is also suitable.

  4. Feed year-round with a balanced liquid fertilizer or palm fertilizer, increasing applications during the active growing season to encourage healthy growth and development.
