The cashew tree (Anacardium occidentale) is a tropical evergreen tree that produces the cashew nut and the cashew apple. It can grow up to about 14 m (46 ft) in height, although dwarf varieties that reach around 6 m (20 ft) are often preferred for better yield and earlier production.

The cashew seed, commonly known as the cashew nut, is widely consumed. It is eaten raw or roasted, used in cooking, and processed into products such as cashew butter and cashew-based alternatives. The cashew apple is a fleshy, yellow to reddish fruit with a sweet aroma and taste, though slightly astringent. It is often used to make juices, syrups, and fermented beverages.

The fruit and seed develop after flowering, and harvesting is usually done when the nuts are fully mature. After collection, the nuts are separated from the cashew apple and dried in the sun to reduce moisture content for storage and processing.

Cashew trees benefit from regular nutrient management for healthy growth and consistent yield. Organic matter such as compost or farmyard manure is often used to improve soil condition, along with balanced fertilizers applied during the growing season.

Pruning is important to maintain tree structure and productivity. Weak, dead, or overcrowded branches are removed to improve airflow, reduce disease risk, and encourage healthy fruiting.

Cashew trees are generally well-suited to tropical climates with good sunlight and well-drained soil conditions.
