Black Sapote (Diospyros nigra) is a rare tropical fruit native to eastern Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America. It belongs to the persimmon family and is commonly known as Black Persimmon, Chocolate Fruit, Chocolate Pudding Fruit, Black Soap Apple, and Zapote Prieto. Despite its name, Black Sapote is not related to White Sapote or Mamey Sapote.

The tree produces attractive, tomato-like fruits with a thin, firm rind. Each fruit typically contains 2 to 10 dark reddish-brown seeds. When unripe, the fruit has olive-green skin and firm white flesh that is not edible. As it ripens, the skin turns deep yellowish-green and the flesh transforms into a rich, dark brown, custard-like pulp.

Black Sapote is popularly known as the "Chocolate Pudding Fruit" because of its smooth texture and appearance, although it has a mild, pleasantly sweet flavor rather than a chocolate taste. The ripe pulp is commonly enjoyed fresh or blended with dates and other fruits to prepare delicious desserts, smoothies, and creamy chocolate-like puddings.

Rich in dietary fiber, vitamins, and potassium, Black Sapote is considered a highly nutritious tropical fruit that supports overall health and well-being.

Black Sapote Benefits

  • Low in fat, making it a healthy dessert alternative.

  • Contains approximately four times more Vitamin C than an average orange.

  • Rich in dietary fiber, supporting healthy digestion.

  • A good source of potassium, providing about 350 mg per fruit.

  • High in Vitamin C, which helps strengthen the immune system.

  • Contains Vitamin A, supporting healthy vision and skin.

  • May support healthy weight management due to its high fiber content.

  • Rich in Vitamin E and antioxidants that help protect cells from oxidative stress and support healthy aging.

Growing Conditions

Black Sapote thrives in tropical and subtropical climates. It prefers well-drained, fertile soil and grows best in full sun to partial shade. Regular watering during the establishment period encourages healthy growth, while mature trees become moderately drought tolerant.

Plant Care

Water the plant regularly without allowing the soil to become waterlogged. Apply organic compost or well-rotted manure periodically to encourage vigorous growth and fruit production. Protect young plants from frost, as Black Sapote is sensitive to cold temperatures.

Harvesting

Harvest the fruits only after they have fully ripened and the skin changes from olive green to deep yellowish-green. The ripe fruits become soft and develop their characteristic dark brown, custard-like flesh, ready to be enjoyed fresh or used in desserts and beverages.
