Bell Apple / Chamba (Paneer, Layer) Fruit Plant
Rose Water Apple (Syzygium samarangense) is a beautiful tropical evergreen fruit tree native to South and Southeast Asia, including Southern India, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia. It is highly valued for its attractive bell-shaped fruits, refreshing taste, and excellent productivity, making it an ideal choice for home gardens and tropical orchards.
The tree grows up to 12 meters tall with glossy evergreen leaves and clusters of beautiful white flowers with four petals and numerous stamens. The fruits are bell-shaped, crisp, juicy, and refreshing, measuring 4–6 cm in length. Depending on the variety, the fruit color ranges from white, pale green, green, rose pink, red, crimson, deep purple, to almost black.
Although called a Water Apple, it is not a true apple. It is a unique tropical fruit known for its mildly sweet flavor and crisp texture. In Malaysia and Indonesia, the tree commonly produces two crops each year under favorable growing conditions. Thai varieties are especially popular for their large fruit size, exceptional sweetness, and delicious flavor, while fruits may be either round or pear-shaped.
Speciality of Rose Water Apple
This Rose Water Apple variety produces attractive rose-colored fruits when fully ripe. It can be grown directly from seeds, and healthy seedlings usually begin fruiting within two years, making grafted plants unnecessary in many cases.
The tree remains compact and starts producing plenty of fruits even at a young age, making it an excellent choice for home gardens. Its sweet, juicy fruits are especially loved by children, and under suitable tropical conditions, the tree can bear fruits multiple times throughout the year.
Fertilizing
Rose Water Apple is a fast-growing and early-bearing fruit tree that benefits from regular fertilization. Apply a balanced fertilizer during the vegetative growth stage and after harvesting. Avoid fertilizing during the flowering and fruit-setting stages.
Organic manures such as cow dung, poultry manure, rabbit manure, or compost are excellent choices, as they gradually supply nutrients while improving soil fertility and structure for long-term healthy growth.
Harvesting
The fruits are ready for harvest when their color changes from green to light green or rose red, depending on the variety. Harvest the fruits carefully by hand once they reach full maturity. Since the skin is delicate and easily bruised, handle the fruits gently during harvesting and transportation to maintain their freshness and quality.
