White Sapote (Casimiroa edulis), also known as Mexican Apple or Casimiroa, is a rare tropical fruit tree native to Eastern Mexico and Central America. Although its name includes "Sapote," it does not belong to the Sapote family and is actually a distant relative of citrus trees.

This evergreen fruit tree is highly valued for its delicious, creamy fruits and excellent productivity. It typically grows 5–16 meters tall and develops an attractive canopy with glossy, palm-shaped leaves. A mature White Sapote tree is capable of producing heavy annual yields, making it an excellent choice for home gardens and tropical orchards.

The fruits are round to oval, measuring 5–10 cm in diameter. As they ripen, the skin changes from green to yellow, revealing a smooth, creamy pulp with a texture similar to ripe avocado. The flavor is rich and unique, often described as a delightful combination of banana, peach, pear, and vanilla. The fruits are best enjoyed when they become slightly soft to the touch.

Benefits of White Sapote

  • Sweet, creamy fruits with excellent flavor and texture.

  • Rich source of carbohydrates, protein, vitamins, and natural nutrients.

  • Best enjoyed fresh or added to fruit salads, smoothies, desserts, and refreshing beverages.

  • The smooth pulp blends well with milk, orange juice, or vanilla for delicious drinks.

  • Traditionally valued in several regions for its calming properties and use in herbal practices.

Plant Care & Growing Conditions

White Sapote thrives in warm tropical and subtropical climates with well-drained, fertile soil. It prefers full sunlight and regular watering during the establishment stage. Once established, the tree is vigorous, relatively low maintenance, and capable of producing abundant fruits for many years.

Harvesting

Harvest the fruits when they show a slight color change from green to yellow and become slightly soft to the touch. Fruits should be carefully clipped from the branch rather than pulled by hand to prevent damage and ensure proper ripening. Fresh fruits offer the best flavor and creamy texture.
