Vadukapuli Naranga Urugai, also known as Giant Bitter Lemon Pickle, is a traditional South Indian pickle known for its bold, tangy, and slightly bitter flavor profile. This unique citrus pickle is especially popular in Kerala, where it is locally called Kari Naranga, meaning “lemon for pickling.”

Unlike regular lemons, Vadukapuli Naranga has a distinct bitter undertone that makes it ideal for long-term pickling and traditional preservation methods. It is widely used in Kerala households to prepare flavorful, spice-rich pickles that pair well with rice and curd-based meals. Though not as commonly consumed as other lemon varieties, it is highly valued for its unique taste and culinary versatility in regional cuisine.

For cultivation, this plant thrives best in hot and humid tropical climates. It requires a warm, sunny location receiving at least 6 hours of sunlight daily. The crop grows well in compost-rich, well-drained soil with a pH range of 5.5 to 6.7. Preparing the soil with aged compost and well-rotted manure before planting improves growth and yield. Regular and consistent watering is essential, as evenly moist soil supports healthy fruit development and better quality harvests.
