Ubajay is a native fruit species from South America belonging to the Myrtaceae family. It is an interesting Eugenia relative found in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. The plant grows as a densely branched tree with dark, rough bark and typically reaches 4 to 8 meters in height.

Tree and Botanical Characteristics

Ubajay has evergreen, globose leaves and produces white flowers typical of the Myrtaceae family. The flowers appear in the leaf axils, are usually solitary, and contain up to fifty stamens. The tree blooms in early spring, and fruits develop about two months after flowering.

Fruit Description and Taste

The fruit is globose, yellow to yellow-orange in color, and grows up to 5 cm in diameter. It has juicy orange pulp with a sweet flavor similar to peach, which is why it is sometimes called the β€œpeach tree.” The taste is generally sweet with a slight tart aftertaste when fully ripe. The fruit is edible and pleasantly juicy.
