Sea Grape (Seedling) Fruit Plant

Sea Grape is a sprawling bush or small tree found along tropical American coastlines, especially near sea beaches. It typically grows up to 8 meters in height, though most plants remain around 2 meters tall. The plant has large, round, leathery leaves that can reach up to 25 cm in diameter, featuring a distinctive red central vein. The bark is smooth and yellowish, and the plant produces small, fragrant white flowers arranged in 6–10 inch spikes.

Fruit Description and Characteristics

In late summer, female sea grape trees produce purplish fruits about 2 cm in diameter, growing in large grape-like clusters. The fruit is fleshy and contains a hard stone inside. It is edible when raw and is also commonly used to make “seaside jelly” or wine. In some regions of the West Indies, the wood is boiled to produce a red dye, and mature wood is valued for cabinet making.

Growing Conditions and Care

Sea grape grows best in sandy, well-drained soil and prefers full sun. Young plants require regular watering until they are well established. It can be propagated through seeds or cuttings. Periodic pruning every few years helps maintain shape and manage growth.

Pests and Issues

Sea grape is generally disease-resistant but may be affected by two common pests. The seagrape borer, a native moth, can damage twigs and small branches, though the impact is usually minor. Another issue is nipple gall, which forms red bumps on the upper leaf surface.

Pollination and Fruiting

Sea grape is dioecious, meaning individual plants are either male or female. Only female plants produce fruit. For successful fruiting, both male and female plants may be required if natural pollination is not available nearby. Fruits typically ripen in the fall and can be eaten fresh or used for jelly and other products.
