Rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum) is a premium tropical fruit tree admired for its bright red, spiny fruits with sweet, juicy, translucent flesh. Native to Southeast Asia, Rambutan is widely cultivated in tropical regions and thrives exceptionally well in Kerala's warm and humid climate. Besides its delicious fruits, the tree also makes an attractive ornamental addition to home gardens and orchards.

The evergreen tree grows well in tropical conditions and produces abundant clusters of eye-catching fruits. Rambutan fruits are highly valued for their refreshing taste and are naturally rich in Vitamin C, carbohydrates, dietary fiber, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and antioxidants.

Plant Care & Growing Conditions

Rambutan thrives in warm, humid tropical climates with temperatures between 22°C and 30°C. It grows best in well-drained sandy loam to clay loam soils enriched with organic matter and prefers a slightly acidic soil pH of 4.5–6.5.

  • Plant in a location receiving full sunlight.

  • Maintain a spacing of approximately 10–12 meters (33–40 ft) between trees for healthy canopy development.

  • Prepare planting pits with fertile topsoil mixed with well-decomposed compost or farmyard manure and organic nutrients.

  • Water regularly during dry periods, especially while the tree is establishing.

  • Apply organic manure and a balanced fertilizer during the growing season to encourage vigorous growth and abundant fruit production.

  • Remove weeds, dead branches, and water suckers regularly to maintain tree health.

Harvesting

Grafted or budded Rambutan plants generally begin fruiting within 3–4 years, while optimum production is achieved after 6–8 years with proper care. Fruits are harvested from July to October in India by cutting the fruit clusters with sharp pruning shears. Harvest fruits carefully without allowing them to fall, as they bruise easily and have a relatively short shelf life. A healthy mature tree can produce 60–70 kg (2,000–3,000 fruits) per season under favorable growing conditions.
