Plant Care & Growing Conditions

Schoolboy Rambutan grows best in warm, humid tropical climates with temperatures between 22°C and 30°C. It prefers well-drained sandy loam to clay loam soils rich in organic matter and performs best in slightly acidic soil with a pH of 4.5–6.5.

  • Plant in a location receiving full sunlight.

  • Maintain a spacing of approximately 10–12 meters (33–40 ft) between trees.

  • Prepare planting pits using fertile topsoil mixed with well-decomposed compost or farmyard manure.

  • Water regularly during dry periods, especially while the tree is establishing.

  • Apply organic manure and a balanced fertilizer during the growing season for healthy growth and abundant fruiting.

  • Remove weeds, dead branches, and water suckers regularly to maintain tree health.

Harvesting

Budded or grafted Schoolboy Rambutan plants generally begin fruiting within 3–4 years, while optimum production is achieved after 6–8 years with proper care. In India, fruits are usually harvested between July and October by cutting the fruit clusters with sharp pruning shears. Handle fruits carefully to avoid bruising, as fresh Rambutans have a relatively short shelf life. A healthy mature tree can produce approximately 60–70 kg (2,000–3,000 fruits) per season under favorable growing conditions.
