Rambai (White, Seedling) Fruit Plant

Rambai, scientifically known as Baccaurea motleyana, is a fruit tree native to Southeast Asia. It grows wild in some regions and is also cultivated for its edible fruits in countries such as Bangladesh, Thailand, and Peninsular Malaysia. The tree is commonly known as rambai or rambi.

Tree and Botanical Characteristics

Rambai trees typically grow 9–12 meters tall and have a short trunk with a broad crown. The leaves are evergreen, shiny green on the upper surface and greenish-brown with a slightly hairy underside. Each leaf can reach up to 33 cm in length and 15 cm in width.

The species is dioecious, meaning male and female flowers grow on separate trees. Both flower types are fragrant and have yellow sepals. Male flower clusters (staminate racemes) can reach up to 15 cm, while female inflorescences may grow up to 75 cm in length.

Fruit Description

The fruits are 2–5 cm long and grow in hanging clusters. They have velvety skin that ranges from pinkish, yellow, to brown and becomes wrinkled when ripe. Inside, the fruit contains whitish pulp with 3–5 seeds. The taste ranges from sweet to slightly acidic, making it enjoyable for fresh consumption.

Uses

Rambai fruits can be eaten raw or cooked and are also used in jams and wine production. In addition to fruit production, the tree is also valued for providing shade and low-quality timber.
