Pitangatuba (Eugenia Selloi) Fruit Plant

Pitangatuba is a rare tropical fruit native to the Cerrado and Atlantic Forest regions of Brazil. It produces striking bright yellow fruits known for their highly distinctive and powerful flavor profile. The fruit is sweet and acidic at the same time, often described as a unique blend of apricot and mango, offering a taste unlike most other tropical fruits.

This species naturally grows in low-lying subtropical and tropical open areas, typically in drier conditions compared to many western Brazilian rainforest species. It is a small perennial evergreen shrub that grows up to 2.5 meters in height, with spreading branches.

The leaves are opposite, leathery, and entire, measuring about 3–5 cm in length. They are dark green and smooth (glabrous) on the upper surface, while the underside is lighter in color and finely pubescent. The leaves also contain oil glands and have very short petioles.

Cultivation Guide

Soil & Moisture:
Prefers moist, rich, well-draining soil. Regular irrigation improves growth, and fruits tend to become larger and more flavorful with consistent watering.

Light Requirements:
Grows best in full sun to partial shade.

Growth Rate:
Fast to medium growth.

Hardiness Zone:
Suitable for outdoor growth in zones 9–12 with frost protection until established. Can also be grown in pots or greenhouses in zones 4+.

Propagation:
Can be grown from seed or tissue culture. Plants in small to medium pots may begin fruiting within 2–3 years. Larger plants grown under ideal conditions may produce fruit within 1 year.

Due to limited research on this species in its native habitat, cultivation practices are generally based on related South American species such as pitanga. Since the plant may show self-incompatibility, growing multiple plants or using grafted specimens can improve fruiting success. Its compact growth habit also makes it suitable as a container or patio plant.
