Olosapo (Seedling) Fruit Plant

Olosapo (Couepia polyandra) is a tropical fruit tree native to Central America and Mexico, belonging to the rose family (Rosaceae). It is now also grown in regions such as Kerala. The tree is valued for both its ornamental appearance and its productive fruiting habit.

This species typically develops into an attractive small tree with a gray trunk. The leaves are 5–7 inches long, shiny dark green on the upper surface, and have a contrasting dull whitish-tomentose underside. The plant can produce multiple fruiting cycles per year, often from early fall through spring.

During flowering, dense terminal panicles of tiny white flowers appear, which later develop into clusters of elongated, pickle-shaped fruits. The fruits are about 3½ inches long and 1½ inches in diameter, turning orange-yellow when ripe. A single crop may contain hundreds of fruits, and the seeds germinate easily beneath the parent tree.

The fruit is thin-skinned and slightly fibrous, with a taste similar to canistel (Pouteria campechiana). It is astringent when unripe and should be consumed only when fully mature and very soft, often when fruits naturally fall from the tree.

Culinary Uses

Olosapo fruit can be eaten fresh or used in a variety of preparations. It is commonly sliced into salads, mixed in fruit bowls, or used as a topping for baked goods. It can also be blended into smoothies, shakes, puddings, ice creams, sauces, jams, and jellies. The fruit pairs well with coconut, banana, strawberry, blueberry, chocolate, caramel, nutmeg, and vanilla.

Fresh ripe fruits are best consumed immediately for optimal flavor, though they can be stored in a refrigerator for 1–3 days.
