Nance (Red, Seedling) Fruit Plant

Nance fruit, scientifically known as Byrsonima crassifolia, is a tropical fruit produced on large shrubs or small trees that can grow up to around 10 meters in height. It is widely found throughout Central America, Latin America, and the Caribbean. The fruit is known by different regional names, such as nanche in Mexico, yaca in Colombia, and hogberry in Jamaica. A red-fleshed variety, often referred to as Malpighia mexicana, is found in Mexico and Costa Rica and is known locally as red nance or guajacote.

The fruit grows in clusters and has a distinct aroma. Its flavor is unique and varies from mildly cheese-like to a blend reminiscent of banana, lychee, and pear. The pulp is typically oily and white, containing a large pit with up to three inedible white seeds.

Nance fruit is also traditionally used in the preparation of fermented beverages, such as a beer-like drink called chicha in Panama and other parts of Latin America.
