Mountain Soursop (Seedling) Fruit Plant

Mountain soursop, scientifically known as Annona montana, is a tropical fruit tree native to Central America, the Amazon region, and several Caribbean islands. The tree closely resembles the common soursop but is more hardier, with a more spreading crown and very glossy leaves. It is also known for producing fruit more continuously throughout the year.

The tree typically begins fruiting within 2 to 3 years after planting. The fruits are nearly round to broad-ovoid in shape, growing up to about 6 inches (15 cm) in length. They have dark green skin covered with numerous short, fleshy soft spines. When ripe, the fruit becomes very soft and naturally falls from the tree.

The pulp is yellow, aromatic, and has a sour to subacid and slightly bitter flavor. It is fibrous in texture and contains many light-brown seeds.

Growing Conditions

Mountain soursop is relatively hardy compared to other tropical fruit trees. It is drought-tolerant and grows well in warm, dry conditions but does not tolerate prolonged waterlogging. It prefers well-drained, fertile soils, especially moist sandy loam. The plant can withstand brief periods of cooler temperatures and even light frost, making it more adaptable than many tropical species.

Traditional Uses & Benefits

Mountain soursop has a long history of use in traditional medicine across South America and the Caribbean. Various parts of the plant—including fruit, seeds, bark, leaves, and roots—have been used to treat intestinal parasites, respiratory conditions such as cough, asthma, and bronchitis, as well as inflammation, diabetes, and hypertension.

Scientific studies on plant extracts have identified potential antiviral, anti-parasitic, anti-inflammatory, anti-rheumatic, and anti-hyperglycemic properties. It has also been explored for its possible antidepressant effects, and early research suggests activity against multi-drug resistant cancer cells.
