Maprang (Seedling) Fruit Plant

Maprang, botanically known as Bouea macrophylla, is a tropical fruit commonly found in Southeast Asia. It is also known by names such as Gandaria, Marian plum, and Plum Mango. Due to its shape and color, it is often mistaken for loquats. In some markets, including Britain (2015), it has been sold under the name “plango,” mistakenly believed to be a hybrid of plum and mango.

Maprang fruits resemble small mangoes and vary in taste depending on the variety, ranging from sweet to sour or a balanced sweet-tart flavor. The fruit is popular in Asia for its versatility in both fresh consumption and culinary use.

The fruit is typically egg-shaped, measuring about 2–5 cm in diameter and up to 6 cm in length. Its skin is light green when unripe and turns a bright orange-yellow when fully mature, resembling apricot tones. When cut open, it releases a mango-like aroma with a slight turpentine note. The flesh is bright orange, soft, jelly-like, and slightly fibrous. Inside, it contains a single large edible seed that is usually bitter and ranges in color from pink to purple.

Maprang is commonly eaten fresh, and the skin is edible, although it is often peeled for convenience. It is typically available in Southeast Asia during late spring through summer.
