Mangosteen (Seedling) Fruit Plant

Mangosteen, scientifically known as Garcinia mangostana and also called purple mangosteen, is a tropical evergreen tree belonging to the family Clusiaceae. Native to Southeast Asia, it is widely cultivated in countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore. Known as the “queen of fruits,” mangosteen is highly valued for its juicy, delicate texture and mildly sweet-tart flavor with a subtle astringent note. It is commonly consumed fresh, and also used in canned and dried forms.

The fruit has a deep purple rind with a thick white segmented pulp inside, which contains soft edible segments surrounding seeds. In India, mangosteen is known by various regional names such as Mangustan (Hindi), Kaattampi (Malayalam), Kokam (Marathi), Hannu (Kannada), and Kao (Bengali). The fruit is widely appreciated by chefs and home cooks for its refreshing taste. According to legend, Queen Victoria of Britain was so fond of mangosteen that she offered a reward for fresh fruit delivery.

Mangosteen has also been used in traditional medicine in various regions. However, while it is promoted in some alternative health systems, scientific evidence supporting major medicinal claims such as cancer treatment is limited.

Maintenance of Plantation

Maintaining consistent soil moisture is essential for healthy mangosteen growth. The plant grows slowly but responds well to proper care. Although it can be propagated through grafting, seed-grown trees tend to be more vigorous and may produce higher yields.

Fertilization

Mangosteen responds well to regular fertilization. Soil or leaf analysis is recommended to determine precise nutrient needs. During early growth stages, applying granular fertilizer every two months along with monthly foliar feeding helps improve plant development. Increased fertilization during the juvenile stage can reduce the time to fruiting from about six years to four years. During fruiting, foliar sprays combined with soil fertilization help improve fruit size and overall yield.

Pest and Disease Control

Mangosteen generally has few serious pests, though occasional issues include leaf-eating caterpillars, mites, and ants that may damage shoots or fruit. Fruits can also be affected by monkeys, bats, and rodents in some regions. Physiological disorders such as “gamboge” (latex oozing) and fruit cracking may occur due to excessive rainfall or moisture imbalance. Sun exposure and storm damage can also affect fruit quality.

Harvesting Mangosteen

Under proper care, mangosteen trees begin fruiting approximately five to six years after planting. The plant typically flowers once a year, though flowering may occur twice following a dry period. In India, fruiting seasons generally occur from July to October (monsoon period) and April to June.

Harvesting is usually done by hand to avoid damage, as fallen fruits can easily crack and lose quality. For tall trees, long poles with hooks and baskets are used to carefully collect the fruit. Proper handling is essential to maintain the premium quality of mangosteen, which is highly sensitive to impact damage.
