Macadamia Nut (Seedling) Fruit Plant

Macadamia is a genus of four tree species native to Australia and belongs to the plant family Proteaceae. It is also known by several common names, including Queensland nut, bush nut, maroochi nut, bauple nut, and Hawaii nut. The trees originate from northeastern New South Wales and central to southeastern Queensland.

The macadamia is a fast-growing evergreen tree with dense, dark green foliage. It can reach up to 18 meters (60 feet) in height and spread about 15 meters (49 feet) wide. The leaves are oblong with blunt tips and are typically over a foot long. They usually grow in whorls of two, three, or four.

The tree produces small, whitish flowers arranged in long hanging spikes. The nuts mature at different times of the year, though peak ripening generally occurs in autumn and spring. Macadamia trees require rich, well-drained soil and about 130 cm (50 inches) of annual rainfall for optimal growth.

The fruit is a hard-shelled nut that requires significant force or specialized tools to crack open. Inside is a creamy kernel known for its rich, buttery flavor and smooth texture. High-quality kernels typically contain at least 72% oil, while lower-oil nuts are often immature and less suitable for roasting.

Macadamia nuts are nutrient-dense and rich in healthy monounsaturated fats, which may support heart health by helping reduce total and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. They are relatively low in carbohydrates and sugar while providing a moderate amount of dietary fiber.

These nuts are also rich in flavonoids and tocotrienols (a form of vitamin E), both of which have antioxidant properties that help reduce inflammation and support overall cellular health.

Macadamia consumption may support improved blood sugar control, aid in weight management, and promote gut health. Some studies suggest potential protective effects on brain health and possible anti-cancer properties, though further research is needed.
