Longan (Diamond River, Layer) Fruit Plant

Longan (Dimocarpus longan), commonly known as longan, is a tropical fruit-bearing tree belonging to the soapberry family (Sapindaceae), which also includes lychee and rambutan. Native to tropical Asia and China, longan is widely cultivated for its sweet, juicy fruit and is an important commercial fruit in many Asian countries.

The fruit is closely related to lychee but has a milder aroma and a more subtle sweetness. When peeled, the translucent white flesh surrounds a single glossy black seed, creating an “eyeball-like” appearance that gives the fruit its common name. The outer shell is thin, firm, and bark-like, becoming easier to peel when fully ripened. The seed is hard, round, and inedible.

Longan fruit is sweet, juicy, and succulent, with a drier sweetness compared to lychee’s more aromatic flavor. It is commonly eaten fresh and is also widely used in Asian cuisine, including soups, desserts, snacks, and sweet-and-sour dishes. Dried longan is especially popular in Chinese cooking and traditional herbal preparations, often used in sweet soups and believed in traditional medicine to support relaxation. Fresh longan is white and juicy, while dried longan becomes dark brown to nearly black in color.

Longan trees prefer warm climates and sandy, well-drained soils. They require regular watering during early growth and balanced fertilization for optimal fruit production. Proper pruning and weed management help maintain tree structure and improve yield. The trees are sensitive to extreme cold but can tolerate brief low-temperature exposure.

Harvesting must be done only when fruits are fully mature, as longan does not continue to ripen after picking. Fully ripe fruits develop a light brown shell and offer the best sweetness and flavor at harvest.
