Lipote (Seedling) Fruit Plant

Lipote (Syzygium curranii) is a tropical fruit tree that can grow up to 15 meters in height. It is native to the Philippines, where it is typically found in primary forests at medium altitudes. The species is relatively uncommon and is mostly harvested from the wild for local food use and timber.

The fruit is produced in compact clusters, with each fruit measuring around 20 mm in diameter. As it ripens, the fruit turns dark purple to almost black in color. The ripe fruit has a slightly dry but pleasant acidic flavor and is usually eaten fresh.

Flowers grow in clusters directly on the trunk and branches, a characteristic feature of many Syzygium species. Lipote is not commonly cultivated as an orchard crop, but trees found near homes are often preserved for their fruit. The plant can be propagated easily through seeds as well as grafting.

Due to declining natural populations, lipote is considered a valuable wild fruit species that could benefit from conservation and wider cultivation efforts.

Lipote is commonly used in making wine and refreshing beverages. It is also processed into candies, compotes, jellies, jams, pickles, and fruit pies.
