Lemon Vine (Layer) Fruit Plant

Lemon Vine (Pereskia aculeata) is a tropical scrambling shrub native to tropical America and belongs to the cactus family (Cactaceae). It is also commonly known as Barbados gooseberry, blade-apple cactus, leaf cactus, rose cactus, and lemon vine. In parts of Brazil, especially Minas Gerais, it is widely known as ora-pro-nóbis and is valued as a nutritious leafy vegetable.

This unusual cactus species differs from typical cacti as it bears broad, leafy growth along with small clusters of needle-like spines on its branches and stems. The plant can display striking foliage with shades of yellow, green, pink, red, and orange that gradually fade into deep green. It produces strongly scented flowers that are white, cream, or pinkish in color, measuring about 2.5–5 cm in diameter and appearing in clusters (panicles).

The fruits are small, rounded berries about 2 cm in diameter. They can range in color from translucent white to pink, yellow, orange, or red. The fruit contains numerous small seeds and has a flavor somewhat similar to gooseberry. Both leaves and fruits are edible and nutritious.

Nutritional Value & Uses

The leaves of Lemon Vine are highly nutritious, containing around 20–30% protein in dry matter with good digestibility. Because of this, the plant is widely used as a leafy vegetable in Brazil. The young shoots and leaves are cooked and eaten as greens.

The fruits can be eaten fresh or used in cooking, including stews, preserves, jams, and jellies. Since the fruit is low in pectin, additional pectin is usually required when making jams and jellies.

Benefits & Applications

Lemon Vine is valued for its high protein and mineral content and is traditionally used in folk medicine. In some regions, the leaves are applied externally for inflammation and swelling.

The plant is also grown as an ornamental cactus in greenhouses and gardens. Due to its vigorous growth and spiny stems, it can form dense, protective hedges when cultivated, sometimes used as a natural living fence.
