Kubal Madu (Seedling) Fruit Plant

Kubal Madu is a vigorous perennial evergreen climbing shrub that produces long woody stems that can extend up to 60 meters. In forest habitats, it climbs high into trees, using hooked, leafless branchlets and tendrils formed from modified inflorescences to attach and support its growth.

The leaves are opposite, arranged in a distichous pattern on short petioles. The plant produces yellowish-white, pentamerous, actinomorphic flowers. Its fruit is a globose, fleshy berry that turns golden yellow to orange-yellow when ripe and remains indehiscent.

Inside, the fruit contains smooth, ovoid seeds with thin endosperm and thick, horny cotyledons, embedded in a mucilaginous orange-yellow pulp. The ripe fruit is edible and consumed raw, and it can also be processed into juice.

Traditional Uses

The latex of the plant is traditionally used as a plaster for treating sores and is also applied in the treatment of yaws. The stems are used in folk medicine for conditions such as dysentery and liver discomfort. The roots are also used internally to address ailments including jaundice, heartburn, and diarrhea.
