Kesusu (Bud) Fruit Plant

Kesusu (Prainea limpato) is a rare tropical fruit native to the island of Borneo and is considered one of the most unusual wild fruits in the region. It is also known by names such as Karon, Buruni, and Ematak. The species is associated with latex-producing plants and is often noted for its distinctive appearance and unique eating experience.

The fruit has a striking star-like shape, with outward-facing pods and a soft, edible outer skin. When ripe, it turns orange to yellow and becomes visually very distinctive. Inside, the edible portion consists of soft, orange-colored seed coverings that are loosely embedded and can be easily removed. The seeds have a slightly oily surface.

The pulp is sweet with a mild sour note, offering a tropical flavor profile often compared to garcinia, with a fragrant sweet-tart aroma. The texture is soft and juicy, making it an enjoyable wild fruit when fully ripe.

Kesusu is mostly found growing in the wild, but it is now considered rare due to ongoing forest loss and habitat decline in its native regions.
