Kei Apple (Seedling) Fruit Plant

Kei apple (Dovyalis caffra) is a small, tangy fruit produced by an evergreen shrub or small tree belonging to the Flacourtiaceae family. Native to Southern Africa, it is commonly found growing in dry and open woodland regions and is often used as a natural fencing plant due to its dense, thorny growth.

The tree typically grows between 6–9 meters tall depending on conditions. It has sharp spines and simple, ovate leaves measuring about 3–6 cm in length. The flowers are small and inconspicuous, with male and female reproductive structures occurring on separate plants, though some female plants may be parthenogenetic.

The fruit is a round berry, similar in size to a small apple, measuring about 2.5–4 cm in diameter. It turns yellow to orange when ripe and contains several small seeds. The flesh is juicy but highly acidic, yet pleasantly refreshing in flavor. During fruiting season, the branches may become heavily loaded with fruit.

Cultivation & Adaptability

Kei apple is highly adaptable and can grow in a wide range of soil and water conditions, including saline environments. It thrives in dry woodland but also performs well in moist open habitats.

The plant is valued for its hardiness, fast growth, and ability to form dense hedges, making it useful both as a fruiting plant and a protective boundary species.
