Kafai Mooti (Seedling) Fruit Plant

Kafai (also known as Kafai Mooti) is a rare tropical fruit found in parts of Southeast Asia. It grows wild in evergreen forests and is also cultivated in regions such as Bangladesh, Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, and parts of India. The plant is considered uncommon despite its wide natural distribution.

The fruit is often compared in appearance and taste to longan. It typically ranges in color from yellow to red and measures around 5 cm in diameter. The peel is thin, soft, and smooth. Inside, the fruit is divided into 2–4 segments resembling cloves, each containing a seed. The flesh is juicy, white, sweet, and slightly sour, giving a refreshing taste, though the seeds are often bitter and make consumption less convenient as much of the pulp clings to them.

The fruit comes from a slow-growing evergreen tree that can reach up to 25 meters in height, with a spreading crown and thin bark. It is also used in various traditional preparations, including fruits, stews, and fermented beverages, and has applications in folk medicine where different parts of the plant are used.

Kafai fruit is considered highly nutritious, containing minerals such as magnesium, potassium, chromium, and protein, along with carbohydrates and vitamin C. It is traditionally valued as a general strengthening fruit, especially during periods when dietary vitamin intake is low.

In traditional systems, it is used to support recovery after illness and is believed to help individuals recovering from blood loss. The bark and roots are also used in folk medicine for their antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, particularly in the treatment of skin-related conditions.
