Jabuticaba (Sabara, Layering) Fruit Plant

Jaboticaba, also known as the Brazilian grape tree, is Plinia cauliflora, a tropical fruit tree in the Myrtaceae family native to the Brazilian states of Minas Gerais, Goiás, and São Paulo. It is best known for its unusual cauliflorous habit, where its purplish-black fruits grow directly on the trunk and larger branches.

The tree is a slow-growing evergreen that can reach up to 15 meters in height if left unpruned. Young leaves emerge in a salmon-pink color before maturing into deep green. The plant produces small white flowers directly from the trunk, which later develop into fruit clusters.

Jaboticaba grows best in moist, rich, slightly acidic soils but is adaptable and can also tolerate well-managed alkaline or sandy coastal soils with proper irrigation. In tropical conditions with regular watering, it may flower multiple times a year, allowing near year-round fruit production. Without cultivation, it typically fruits only once or twice annually.

The fruit is a thick-skinned berry, about 3–4 cm in diameter, resembling a slip-skin grape. It has a dark purple, slightly astringent skin enclosing a sweet, gelatinous white or pinkish pulp. Each fruit contains one to four relatively large seeds.

Harvesting & Uses

Jaboticaba fruits have a very short shelf life, often beginning to ferment within 3–4 days after harvest. Because of this, they are commonly processed into jams, jellies, juices, wines, tarts, and liqueurs. Fresh fruit is rarely available outside cultivation regions.

The fruit is valued both for its unique flavor and its ornamental appeal, making the tree a popular choice in tropical fruit gardens.
