Green sapote is a close relative of the mamey sapote and belongs to the Sapotaceae family. It is a tropical evergreen fruit tree native to Central America, and it is still relatively little known outside its native range, despite its highly regarded flavor.

The tree typically grows between 5–16 meters in height and has evergreen foliage with alternate, palmately compound leaves consisting of 3–5 leaflets. The leaflets are elongated with smooth margins and are borne on relatively long petioles.

The fruit is an ovoid drupe, about 5–10 cm in diameter, with a thin inedible skin that changes from green to yellow as it ripens. Inside, the edible pulp varies in color from creamy white to beige-yellow or orange-red depending on the variety. The texture is smooth and creamy, similar to ripe avocado, and the flavor can range from mild to banana-like, peachy, pear-like, or even vanilla-like. Each fruit may contain 1–5 seeds.

Harvesting requires care, as the fruit should be clipped from the branch rather than pulled, to prevent damage and premature spoilage. Slight softening and color change indicate ripeness.

Green Sapote Benefits & Uses

Green sapote is best consumed raw, as cooking can reduce its flavor and texture quality. It can be eaten fresh, added to fruit salads, or blended into drinks with milk, orange juice, or vanilla for a smooth beverage.

It is considered highly nutritious, with a food value comparable to bananas in terms of carbohydrates, protein, and vitamins.

Traditionally, parts of the plant such as the bark, seeds, and leaves contain compounds like casimirosine, which have been associated with sedative and sleep-inducing effects. Leaf decoctions are also used in folk medicine for conditions such as diabetes, and in some traditional systems it has been used to help manage blood pressure.
